Easter Week Processions

The people of Spain are nearly all Catholics, and Easter is a special time for celebrating their religion.

During Easter week huge processions with amazing floats and costumes march through the streets of towns all through Spain. The parades leave each of the town´s churches to wind slowly around the streets.

People carry lifelike statues of Christ on the Cross and his mother the Virgin Mary in mourning.

In each town the religious brotherhoods, representing guilds of tradesmen and important citizens, spend all year long preparing the elaborate costumes and decorations.

Spectators stand in the streets to watch them pass by, or hang out of the windows to see them. The men in these costumes are all carrying candles.
