Food in the Netherlands

Meals

Like us, Dutch people start with breakfast early in the morning before going to school or work. They eat bread covered with meat, cheese, sweet stuff, and peanut butter, and sometimes porridge or cornflakes. Around 10 o'clock they drink tea or coffee.

Lunch is between noon and 1 p.m. Most people and children eat bread again, just like for breakfast, and sometimes fruit. In the afternoon one drinks tea or coffee again.

Between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. it's dinner time. They cook a meal containing soup, potatoes, vegetables (or salads), meat and as dessert, fruit or custard. A traditional favourite food is mashed potatoes and cabbage.

Dutch Apple Cake

Ingredients:

1 and1/2 cups of flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon mixed spice
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking soda

1 cup of sugar
1 cup of sultanas
2 grated apples
1 unbeaten egg

Method:

Put all the ingredients except the butter into a bowl.

Melt the butter, and pour over the rest.

Mix well.

Place in a greased tin, and bake for 50 to 60 minutes in the oven at 160 degrees C.

You don't ice this cake, but you could sprinkle it with cinnamon and sugar, or lemon juice and sugar, after it is cooked, but while it is still warm.
