Michelangelo

One of the most famous of all artists was Michelangelo. He painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, and hundreds of thousands of tourists visit it each year.

It took him years and years to paint it, lying on his back on top of huge scaffolding. It must have been very uncomfortable!

Below you can see part of the detail of this painting. It is a part that is showing Noah's flood. Michelangelo spent a lot of time watching and drawing people, so that he could paint them looking real.

Do you think you could paint people as well as this?

As well as being a great painter, Michelangelo was a wonderful sculptor. He could carve beautiful statues from stone.

This statue is called the Pieta, and it shows Mary holding Jesus' body after it was cut down from the cross.

(A lot of the art in those days was about religious subjects).

There is another very famous statue carved by Michelangelo, called David. It is thought to be one of the most beautiful statues ever made, and artists come from all over the world to admire it.
