Italian Buildings

A lot of Italian villages are built close to the sea, where people can go fishing to feed their families. In rocky places like this, the houses are quite tall, and built on rocky areas. In this particular village you can't take cars into it. Why do you think that is?

This is the Certosa di pavia.

What kind of a building do you think this was? Do you think it would be a home for a family, or a religious building, or something else?

The Ponte Rialto in Venice is a famous bridge. Back hundreds of years ago, people often built houses on the sides of bridges. It was a good place to have your house, because the waste from your toilet could fall straight into the river below. You would have to be a bit careful rowing under the bridges, wouldn't you?

In the middle of Rome is a building that is thousands of years old. This is the Colosseum of Rome. People used to come here to watch games, and gladiators fighting - it is a huge stadium. It was built of stone, and built so well that a lot of it is still standing for tourists to come and look at!
