Castles in Germany

	When you go exploring in Germany, you will find many old castles you can visit. On the left you can see two. One was built for a rich person in a peaceful time. The other was built at a time when there were lots of wars and fighting. Which is which? Can you explain why?

 

This castle is called Neuschwantstein, and it was built only a hundred or so years ago by a very rich man. He wanted to build a castle that looked like a fairy tale castle, and he found a beautiful place in the woods, overlooking a mountain lake, to build his castle. Lots of tourists come to look at it every year. If you look in the library at some books of fairy stories, you will see pictures of lovely castles, but they don't much look like real castles. That is because real castles were usually built so that they could keep out people attacking them. That is why they had very high, thick walls, which were smooth so you couldn't climb them, and only tiny windows.
