Shopping in France

Miss Baillie will have to learn what the words mean in French, if she wants to find the right shops! Do you know what a boulangerie sells?

(Hint: it would be a good shop to go into if you were feeling hungry!)

In the smaller towns, often people shop at the markets that are held regularly in the streets. There you can choose from fruit and vegetables that have been brought in from the countryside.

Mostly people in the big towns shop at supermarkets though, just the same way we do here in New Zealand.

Some shops are very old. This one has sold all sorts of things in the time since it was built.

Right now, it sells delicious cakes.

Paris is one of the most famous cities in the world for buying clothes. Every year, very rich people go to Paris to buy the latest fashion, and in every country in the world, designers copy the ideas they see at Paris fashion shows.

The big shops in the cities have wonderful window displays. This display is for a very special day we celebrate too! It is called Fete des Meres in France. What would we call it here? Look at the language site, and find out what the word "Mere" means.

Then you should be able to work out what the sign in the window of this shop means!
