Eating in France

France is also famous for its food. Here shoppers are choosing baguettes, or long loaves of bread. This kind of bread only keeps well for one day, so you need to buy it on the day that you want to eat it.

Although you will find bakers with their baguettes and croissants all over France, bread comes in different shapes with different names in the North and South of the country. The croissant was actually invented in Austria, but the French now eat it for breakfast, for Sundays and holidays especially. They often dip it in their drink of coffee or hot chocolate.

There are many cafes all over France, where people gather to eat light meals, drink, and talk to their friends. In summer, the tables and chairs are put outside on the pavement, so people can enjoy the sun.

One special French dish is escargots. There is a picture of some (before being cooked!) on the left. Would you like to eat these?

France is also very famous for its wines and its cheeses.

Cheeses like Camembert, and Brie are called after the places they are made. So are many of the wines. Champagne is only allowed to be called champagne if it comes from a particular part of the country..

Here is a recipe for quiche, written in French. Even in New Zealand we enjoy eating quiche.

The most famous quiche of all is called Quiche Lorraine.
