The Royal Family

Back about fifty years ago, this person was the Queen. She was married to the King, and when he died in 1952, she became the Queen Mother. People often call her the Queen Mum.

She has just had her 100th birthday!

The King and Queen had two children, Elizabeth and Margaret. Usually the oldest son becomes King when the old king dies, but as there was no son, Elizabeth became the new Queen.

She was crowned in Westminster Abbey as Queen Elizabeth the Second. She is married to Prince Phillip (who isn't a king because being married to a Queen isn't enough to be made a King - you have to be born son of a King.)

Prince Charles

Princess Anne

Prince Andrew

They had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward.

Prince Edward

The next one to be King will be Charles. Even if Anne had been the eldest, she would not have inherited the throne because she is a girl.

Why do you think this is the rule?

Prince Charles married Diana (shown on the right). They had two boys, William and Harry.

They were not very happy together, so they got divorced. A few years ago, Princess Diana was killed in a car accident.

Prince William

Prince Harry

The Queen is also the Queen of New Zealand.

Do you know how to sing God Save the Queen?
