Famous Places

This picture on your left shows a famous lighthouse at Beachy Head.

It is so often foggy there, that the lighthouse has to be at sea level on the rocks, rather than on the top of the cliff, where it can be too cloudy to see the light from sea level.

Have you heard of "the white cliffs of Dover"? On the coast of England where it faces France, the cliffs are chalky and white, and if you sail to France, they are the last thing you see of England.

See if you can get hold of a famous song sung by Vera Lyn during World War Two called "The White Cliffs of Dover".

If you are in England in the springtime, you might be lucky enough to see the bluebells in flower.

In the woods, under the trees, hundreds and hundreds of flowers bloom for a short time.

We can't grow these kinds of bluebells in Auckland because it is too warm.

Because Britain is an island, most people don't live far from the sea. Brighton is a famous town on the coast, and people go there for holidays.

The beach is rather stony, but they have a long pier, with all kinds of shops and places to play games. You can see it in the background of this photo.

Usually the weather is better than this!
