Protoceratops (pro-toe-SAIR-ah-tops)
Protoceratops was the first of the true ceratopsians. This dinosaur was about the size of a pig. It had a turtle-like beak and a small frill. Protoceratops eggs were the first dinosaur eggs ever found. This proved that most dinosaurs were egg-laying animals. The females made holes in the sand and laid their eggs in them. These holes formed a circle and were soon covered with sand by the female so that they would stay warm and eventually hatch. Protoceratops lived near the end of the Cretaceous time period and was found in the Gobi Desert.
