Another Room 15 Science Experiment !

Making a Volcanic Eruption!

First we got the ingredients.
These were:
Half a Mylanta tablet
A film canister and lid
Water.

Next we half filled the film canister with the water.

Then we dropped the Mylanta tablet into the canister and quickly put on the lid nice and tight.

We stood back and waited. We had to wait for about 30 seconds, then....

 BANG!!

Off popped the lid. The Mylanta fizzed out and sprayed into the air.
(Look at Stephen with his hands on his ears!!)

The force of the explosion tipped the canister over and the rest of the water poured out onto the ground.

The pressure from inside the canister blew the lid about 3 metres away from the canister.
Here Stephen is pointing to the lid on the ground.

So what's this got to do with volcanic eruptions?

Magma is rock that has become so hot that it has melted.
Magma has gases inside it, and it bubbles up to the earth's crust.
If there is a build up of the gases inside the magma a lot of pressure starts to push on the earth surface.
When too much pressure builds up that is when a volcano will erupt.

Kaboom!!
