Since 221 BC emperors and empresses have ruled China. The wife of the emperor or a woman who rules is called the empress. The emperor or empress rules an empire or group of nations or states. The first emperor of China was Shi Huangdi of the Qin family. All of the rulers from this family was known as the Qin Dynasty. The time period a family rules is called a Dynasty.
