Village Welcomes Cameroon
by Sixth Graders, Nakatsue Elementary School

  Good luck, Cameroon!
A sign saying "Good luck, Cameroon!" in French and Japanese.

The toddlers at Nakatsue Daycare Center are learning French so that they can support Cameroon, who are holding a training camp in Nakatsue. The older kids can now speak some French quite smoothly.

One of the other things the people of the village have done is to make tulip hats to wear when supporting the Cameroon team.

Meanwhile, middle-school students have been learning the Cameroonian national anthem. The members of the music club hope to impress the members of the team with their performance. The Taio Gold Mine, a sightseeing spot near the village, was visited by 50% more people in March 2002 than in March 2001. Instead of the usual tour groups, many of the visitors seemed to be soccer fans.

The village has produced guide maps in three languages: Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, and 2,000 copies of each of them have been distributed to city and town halls and major tourist attractions. Visitors can pick up the maps there.

From the Reporters
Before, I didn't know anything about Cameroon or supporting the team, but thanks to World Cup Kids! I have found out a lot!

At first I wasn't really interested in the World Cup, but when the Cameroon team decided to hold a camp here I started to look things up. I'm glad I did!
