The 2002 FIFA World Cup will reach its climax on June 30 when the final is held at International Stadium Yokohama. Also in Yokohama, about 430 pictures drawn by Japanese and South Korean elementary-school students on the theme of soccer are on display until June 20.
The event is called the Japan-South Korea Friendship 2002 Children's Soccer Picture Exhibition. It opened at the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery on June 10. The pictures feature such scenes as players wearing the soccer uniforms of Japan and South Korea shaking hands and flags of different countries around the world lined up. The children of the two countries have freely expressed their feelings about soccer in the pictures.
This exhibition was held thanks to a call by the nongovernmental organization Red Heart, which helps children all over the world. Kazuo Kyo, a representative of Red Heart, said: "We hope that having children from Japan and South Korea work toward the same goal - drawing soccer pictures - will help to advance friendly relations between the two countries."
Red Heart began by helping children in Somalia and now conducts aid activities in countries like Afghanistan through its "Give a cup of rice" program. Part of the exhibition was devoted to photos introducing the group's activities. (Kanagawa Shimbun)
