On April 26 the 2002 FIFA World Cup Sapporo Promotion Committee announced that it would open the Sapporo International Fan Village in Odori Park, located in the city's Chuo Ward. Six national teams, including Argentina and Saudi Arabia, will play first-round matches in Sapporo, and visitors to the village will be able to enjoy things like traditional music from those countries and Japanese dance.

The purpose of the village is to allow city residents and visitors from around the world the chance to deepen their understanding of other cultures. It will be open from May 31 to June 8. Activities include performances by a tango band from Argentina, and each of the six countries will have a booth manned by its supporters. Snowmen will also be built in order to show Sapporo as "snow country" to visitors. (Hokkaido Shimbun Press)
