Answer: A Karate, which is well known around the world through such movies as The Karate Kid, is a technique of self-defense that was developed and perfected in Okinawa. Karate was created in Okinawa from a martial art that was brought over from China in the fourteenth century. Because of the Ryukyu kingdom's policy of banning weapons and a 1609 law prohibiting weapons under the Satsuma clan, self-defense with "empty hands" became the main method for Okinawan people to defend themselves against enemies carrying weapons. A variety of sports, including many marine sports, have long been popular in Okinawa, which is surrounded by sea and enjoys a warm climate. Every April one of the largest triathlon tournaments in Japan takes place on Miyako Island. From February to March many professional baseball and soccer teams hold their preseason training camps in Okinawa. |
