The history of bingata stretches back about 400 years. It was influenced by the sarasa, or calico, of India and Java and by the yuzen of Kyoto, Japan. In bingata, natural dyes and colors are used to create colorful backgrounds and designs unique to Okinawa. The patterns reflect the glittering style of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
