A Primer On Okinawa Folk Traditions

Islands of Song and Dance

Okinawa Prefecture is made up of about 170 islands (of which 48 are inhabited) stretching out for 1,2000 kilometers (750 miles) from the southern tip of Japan. Since ancient times these islands have been home to a variety of performing arts. For this reason Okinawa is sometimes called "the islands of song and dance."

Okinawan children are taught a variety arts by their parents from an early age. They also learn about their local area's traditional music, dances, and sports at elementary, middle, and high school.
