Okinawa's Economy |
The service industry occupies a very significant position in the Okinawan economy. Tourism is particularly important, with 3 million visitors coming to Okinawa every year. There are historic sites from the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom--which lasted from the fifteenth century to 1879--such as Shuri Castle (where the Ryukyu king lived) and the ruins of Enkakuji Temple, where the souls of Ryukyu monarchs are enshrined. And the idyllic ocean that laps the islands of Okinawa and the coral reefs it contains are a fabulous environment for water sports enthusiasts.
In agriculture, sugar cane and pineapple thrive in Okinawa's subtropical climate. One of the main industries on the islands is food processing-of sugar and pineapple, for example-though recently heavy industries like oil refining have been growing. Traditional industries include dyed products, pottery, and textiles, which make delightful souvenirs for visiting tourists.
