A Primer On Okinawa Basic Information

Okinawa's Climate and Ocean
Okinawa is made up of over 170 islands. They stretch for a total distance of about 1,000 km (630 miles) and are the only region of Japan with a subtropical ocean climate, which is characterized by a mild climate with relatively slight differences between the seasons.

The average annual temperature is a warm 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit), and from around April the sea temperature is comfortable enough to swim in. Every year the region is hit by numerous typhoons, however, and visitors will notice that many Okinawan homes are protected from strong winds by stone walls or hedges of sturdy trees.

Okinawa enjoys a warm climate all year round and is surrounded by a beautiful ocean. Brightly patterned subtropical fish swim in the emerald green sea, and large coral reefs stretch across the ocean floor.
