The 15,000-hectare beech forest of the Shirakami district is around 8,000 years old, making it one of the oldest in the world. It's home to nearly 2,600 different animal and plant species.

It was placed under government protection after being added to UNESCO's list of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1993.
