The way you use colour to mount a painting is very important. It should not dominate the picture.

1. Use a colour that appears in the picture only a small amount, not the main colour.

2. Only use two colours in your frame, so it doesn't get busy.

In this example the colours are the black of the poppy centres, and the cream of the roses.
