Dogs of War
Soldier's story

Soldiers have taken their dogs to war over many many centuries. This picture shows an ancient Celt going into battle with his fighting dog, a huge mastiff.

These dogs fought alongside their masters, and were great fighters.

Dogs were used to some extent in World War I, and to a greater extent in World War II. Guards in prison camps patrolled with their dogs, who were usually German Shepherds or Doberman Pinschers.

This soldier is in Vietnam, with his dog, which was owned and trained by the US Army.

During the Vietnam war, 4,000 dogs were sent to Vietnam not knowing what was happening or what their fate would be, and like any veteran, they thought they would come home too. But these dogs were left behind.

These dogs and their handlers became attached, working side by side, saving lives of many. These heroes were either put to sleep or left behind to a fate unknown. The government considered them to be equipment.
