There are some search and rescue dogs that are trained to work in snow. Countries like Switzerland, with lots of mountains, have many of these dogs. There are some in New Zealand, but not as many. Here is a group of dogs with their handlers, during a training session. |

When there is an avalanche, it is vitally important that anyone buried in the fall of snow is found quickly, before they suffocate, or freeze to death. These dogs can sniff the snow, and tell their handler when there is someone buried maybe many metres below in the snow. Then the person can be dug out, and the dog earns its reward. |
