Saving lives
.

This is what actually happened a few years ago, when a woman called Bayly collapsed, and Lyric, her companion dog, rang emergency services for help. This was in America.

Be patient while the movie loads and plays.

At the emergency centre, they can trace where the call comes from, and their computer tells them that there is a special medical dog at that address. They will then send an ambulance straight away to the house.

This has happened several times. Lyric has saved Bayly's life - without her dog, she would not ever be able to be on her own.

This dog, Lyric, has been trained to watch out for when his owner collapses and is unconscious. If this happens, Lyric rushes to the phone, and knocks it off on to the floor.

It uses its paws to dial three times (the phone is set up so that any combination of numbers dials 111 for an emergency call), and then it barks loudly.

Companion dogs are often very sensitive to their owners. Some dogs tell their owners when there is a sound (like the door bell, or the telephone) because their owner is deaf.

Other dogs can tell if their owner is about to have an epileptic fit, and they can warn other people in the house to come and look after the person.
