Zoo enclosure for gorillas

When architects designed a new gorilla enclosure for the Buffalo Zoo, these are some of the specifications that they worked out. This was done over 20 years ago, so the prices would be a lot higher now!

The whole thing cost 1.8 million dollars to build.

It was made of precast natural rock formations (gunnite cement) applied under pressure.

It reached 14 metres from floor to ceiling.

It had 4 viewing windows of 1 inch thick, laminated tempered glass

It had 6,000 sq. feet of skylight

There were 2 charged wire systems (like electric fences) to protect gorillas and plantings (similar to cattle fencing).

Temperature was maintained at a constant 70-72 degrees F and the humidity at 60-70%.

The waterfall was filtered and recycled, and not used for drinking water.

Two kinds of birds live in the enclosure, the Superb glossy starling, and Lady Ross's Plantain Eaters.

Plantings

Approximately 40 species and varieties of plants were put in, valued at  $17,000

1,600 cu. ft. of potting soil (enough to fill two tractor trailers).

Plants were lifted by ropes to upper levels of the enclosure (some weigh 1000 lbs.).

Insect pests controlled by other insects(ladybugs eat mealy bugs).

Off Exhibit Area

There are stalls 4 metres square, where gorillas can go for cleaning, feeding, and as a rest from the main exhibit area.

Makes you think, doesn't it? Planning a zoo enclosure is a major undertaking!
