What kind of pet?

NEXT

Many people want a dog as a pet. If you take on a dog, you have to feed it well, get it neutered, and exercise it every day. You also have to train it.

Dogs can mess up your house and your garden, and they will misbehave if they are bored and don't have enough exercise. When you walk your dog, you need to pick up after it, if it toilets on the walk.

Cats are a bit easier to look after, but they still need to be fed every day, groomed regularly, and taken to the vet when they are sick.

They can scratch things in the house, and if you let them outside, they can also kill birds and mice, and then bring them back inside to eat.

A guinea pig is easier to look after, but it still needs regular attention. You must move its cage to new grass, as well as give it other food, and clean the cage out regularly, or it will get disgustingly dirty from the droppings.

A mouse will normally be kept inside, but again, you must clean the cage regularly.

Having a rabbit is much like looking after a guinea pig, and with all 3 of these (rabbit, guinea pig and mouse), you need to keep only the same sex of animal in a cage. Otherwise you end up with lots and lots of baby animals that have to have homes found for them. It is irresponsible to let your pet breed like this.

A pet bird, such as this budgie, does not need as much looking after as a dog or a cat. It can be left with food and water for a few days, but you can't leave it for more than a weekend on its own.

Birds like these need to be exercised by letting them fly around, but if you let them escape outside, they will not survive in the wild.

Possibly one of the easiest pets to look after is a fish. You need to clean out the tank, and to feed it, but with a slow release food pellet in the bottom of the fish tank, you can probably leave it for a week at a time.

But you can't pat a fish, or take it for walks!
