What can you do to help?

One of the main problems for our native birds is that we like to have pets. And our pets are predators. They had to kill birds in order to survive in the wild, and they still kill birds wherever they can. Any pet cat or dog will kill birds, no matter how sweet and cuddly and gentle they are at home, and no matter how much cat food they are given. It is simply the way they were made - they love to hunt.

Some people do not realize what their pets get up to when they are roaming around the neighbourhood. Cats can roam over 20km at nightime, and this is the time that they kill most birds. Dogs that roam in areas near bush where kiwi live on the ground can kill huge numbers in a single night.

A big problem is when people abandon their cat, or let a lovely cuddly ferret go free - the cats and ferrets are killers, and do a huge amount of killing in order to eat.
