 Takahe

The Takahe used to be found all through New Zealand, but now there are only 60 birds left. At one stage they were thought to be extinct, but a few pairs were found, and careful breeding has brought the numbers up to 60.

They are a very endangered species, and live in tussock grass in mountain areas. They look a bit like a Pukeko, but they are much larger, and greener on their back. Their wings are only used for show - they cannot actually fly.
