 Black Robin

The Chatham Island Black Robin is a success story for endangered species. In 1980 only 5 birds were left in the world, but careful treatment of the last breeding pair brought the numbers up to 250 today. You can read about this in the book "Old Blue".

These robins eat insects, and grow to be 15cm high. The reason they were nearly wiped out was cats and rats. There numbers are still very small, and conservation staff still look after them carefully, and make sure they keep the islands where they live clear of pests.
