The Kokaho is another endangered bird, related to the Huia, which is completely extinct now. It doesn't fly very well, and prefers to use its legs to leap and run through the forest. There are less than 400 pairs of North Island birds left alive, and the numbers are still falling. They are easily killed by rats, stoats and possums. Male and female birds look very similar. They have a particularly beautiful song, which they sing to keep away other birds from their area. |
