 Kiwi

The Kiwi is very unusual, because it can't fly, has hair-like feathers, and whiskers. It also has nostrils at the end of its beak, to sniff out food. It also has a huge egg for the size of the bird.

It is related to the moa, which is now extinct. They mate for life, and can live as long as 30 years.

Their numbers are dropping rapidly, because they are easily killed by cats, dogs, stoats and ferrets. The kiwi is a taonga, and we need to look after it and protect it.
