 Hoiho

The Hoiho is the yellow-eyed penguin. Their name means noise shouter in Maori, and they have a loud shrill call. It is only found in New Zealand, and is one of our threatened species.

It is grey-blue, with a white belly, and a yellow band around the area of its eye. They like to live on their own, and need to live partly in the sea, and partly on land.

Their numbers are falling because more houses are being built on the coastline, and because dogs and cats catch and eat the young chicks.
