Red-billed Gull

The Maori name for this gull is Tarapunga. We usually just call it a seagull. You will find these birds by beaches, or if it is stormy you will find them quite a long way inland.

They are scavengers, which means they look through rubbish to see what they can find to eat. You will often see them at rubbish dumps.

They are quite noisy birds, and often call to each other as they fly overhead. You may see them squabbling with each other too! They sound as though they are being nasty but they live in large flocks, and they warn each other about any danger.
