Kiwi's homes are called burrows. Their burrows are safe places to sleep and to have their chicks. Because they live in many different places in New Zealand their burrows may be in different kinds of places too. They may be in the roots of flax or tussock, in piles of needles in a pine forest, under tree roots or in fallen trees in the bush. Sometimes kiwi just scrape a hollow in the ground and stay there. Kiwi may quickly clear a burrow at the end of a night's work, crash there during the day and then move on to a new burrow the next day. When it sleeps, the kiwi puts its head under its wing. Kiwis have long beaks and short wings, so it looks very silly. The Great Spotted Kiwi likes deep dens with lots of entrances, but other kiwi just have one way in to the burrow. |
