Training a kitten

First of all the kitten needs to be trained to use the dirt box. After eating, put the kitten gently into the box, and show it how to scratch with your finger. If it starts going to the toilet somewhere else, pick it up and put it straight in the litter box again.

Miss Tatana will need to keep the dirt box, or litter box, very clean, because cats are very fussy.

The kitten will need to learn where to find food and drink. Miss Tatana will have to make sure there is always clean fresh water available for her new pet to drink.

The new kitten will also need to learn that it is OK to scratch the scratching post, but not to scratch the furniture. If it starts on the chairs, Miss Tatana will have to lift it away, and take it to the scratching post so that it learns to use that instead.

If the kitten does something wrong, Miss Tatana may bang a newspaper on the floor to make a noise, but she will never hit her cat. Pets don't understand why they are being hit, and all they learn if you hit them, is that they should be scared to come near you.

Kittens need to learn to play gently, and to sheathe their claws. If they scratch while they are playing, the best way to train them is to say "NO!" and stop playing and leave them alone. That way they learn to be careful if they want to have a game with you.

If a kitten is very naughty and you need to make it stop doing something, you can give it a small spray from a mister bottle of water. Cats don't like this, and it will teach them to stop doing something, especially if you say "NO!" at the same time.

Kittens love to sleep with you in your bed, but it is not a good idea. When they are small, they will probably wake up in the middle of the night and decide it is time for a game!

Miss Tatana might get very grumpy if she is woken up every night by a playful kitten pouncing on her face and wanting to play!

The best thing is to give the kitten a place of its own to sleep, in another room, with the litter bin near by. You should never let a cat roam around and go outside at night, because that is how they get run over on the roads, or get hurt by another cat in a cat fight.
