At certain times of the year, hunters are allowed to shoot ducks.

In New Zealand you are allowed to shoot Mallard, Spoonbill, Native Grey, Paradise, and Black Swan, but only from May to August.

Some have only a 6 week season from early May.

This means the birds are not totally killed off, and have time to bring up babies.
