Understanding shotguns

A shotgun does not shoot one bullet. It shoots out many many pellets - small bits of metal that spray out as they come out of the gun.

This card shows what the spray pattern is like.

If the hunter shoots lots of pellets into the bird, it will die straight away.

But birds that are flying nearby may not be killed, but will get injured by the pellets in the spray. They could die very slowly, in a lot of pain.
