The Romans liked to keep their bodies in good shape. Because of this, they, like the ancient Greeks, played sports to keep fit. Read on to find out more about athletics in ancient Rome.

What sports could I have played in ancient Greece?

The ancient Romans competed in several different athletic events. They ran in races, wrestled in wrestling matches, and played handball. They also considered the gladiator fights at the Colosseum as sports. The Romans also went to public baths.

What would I do in a public bath?

Public baths were where the ancient Romans went to exercise. Almost every town had public baths that anyone could use. First, you would leave your clothes in a changing room. Then you would lift weights in the training room or exercise yard. After working out, you would go sit in the very hot water of the calidarium. Next you would sit in a warm bath in the tepidarium. Then you would go take a plunge into a cold pool in the frigidarium. Finally, after your bath, you would get a relaxing massage and rest before going home.
