The English alphabet is based on the Greek alphabet. In fact, the word "alphabet" comes from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, alpha and beta. The chart below shows the letters of the Greek alphabet, their names, and the sound they make in English. After you look at the chart, try the activity below it.

Now take out a piece of paper. Write your name in big letters on the top line. Use the chart above to write the Greek letters that make the sound closest to those in your name. This is your Greek name!
