Games and Entertainment

Greek men went regularly to the town sports centre -the gymnasium- for exercise, such as wrestling, and to meet friends and talk. They also played energetic ball games. The Greeks had board games too. In a black-figure vase painting two soldiers are playing a game that may have been something like draughts.

Parties

Greek dinner parties were for men only, although some clever and beautiful unmarried women, called hetairai, might be invited too. The guests sat around on couches in the andron (the dining room), each with his own table. Slaves served the food and presented the guests with wreaths of flowers to wear. After the meal, the men stayed to drink and have a discussion, called a symposion.
