Remember the Rule of Thirds

Explaining the rule || Look at the lines || Faces || See an example

1. Explaining the rule

The rule of thirds says that you shouldn't put things dead in the middle of your photo, or divide the photo in half. Instead, lines like the horizon should be one third up, or one third down. Look at how the sky is just at the top of this photo - not halfway down.

2. Look at the lines

See how the main points of interest in this photo are somewhere on the lines of thirds?

3. Faces - they follow the rule too

The most important thing you look at in a face is the eyes. So when you photograph someone's face (not their whole body) you should make sure one of the lines goes through their eyes. And it isn't very likely that it will be the bottom line! Where would the lines of thirds go in this photo?

4. Look at the lines here

Once again, the photo is balanced because the rule of thirds is followed.
