Lead the eye into the photo

Where are people looking? || Into the distance || Movement

1. Where are people looking?

Going back to this photo, look at why it was cropped in the way it was. If it had been cropped with the empty space to the left of the man, rather than to the right, it would have looked most peculiar. That is because he is looking towards the right - therefore you need room in the photo to the right.

2. Taking the eye far back into the distance

Here, the eye is drawn from the men in the foreground, way way back past all the pillars, to the end of the corridoor. The photographer had to be standing exactly in the centre of the passage way in order to get this effect.

3. Movement into the frame instead of out of it

This photo shows people moving towards a gap in the rocks. They are moving away, but also slightly to the right, so the photo needs empty space on the right to balance the photo.
